The Historic Strand Theatre, located in downtown Rockland on the coast of Maine, has been entertaining audiences since 1923. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the theater underwent an extensive renovation in 2005, which included new sound and projection equipment, a fully restored interior and exterior, and a bright new marquee. In 2014, the theater became a non-profit organization, and is now owned and operated by the Friends of the Strand Theatre.
Today, the Strand Theatre is a multi-use venue offering the best of current independent and world cinema, live musical performances & concerts, comedy, conferences, The Metropolitan Opera and National Theatre of London Live In HD broadcasts, and other special events on our stage and screen.
MOVIES AT THE STRAND Film programming at the Strand includes an on-going regular schedule of current independent, documentary, and foreign film titles. We also offer special film series, the occasional retrospective and classic film, film festivals, and special film events in conjunction with local organizations and partners including; the Saltwater Film Society, The Camden International Film Festival, The Farnsworth Art Museum, and others. At The Strand, seeing a movie is also about the experience. We present movies the way they were meant to be seen... on The Big Screen and in the restored beauty of a 1923 classic movie-house. The theater is equipped with state-of-the art projection and Dolby-digital surround sound, and our trained projectionists take great care to give our audience the best movie-going experience possible. LIVE PERFORMANCE AT THE STRAND The Strand Theatre presents a diverse year-round program of live music, performing arts, and other special events, including the Strand's ongoing concert series of live music featuring some of the finest established and emerging folk, roots, blues, and world music artists from around the globe. We also present a variety of performances broadcast LIVE via satellite including; The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD, theatrical productions from The National Theatre of London, and much more.
