First National Bank recently presented $12,500 to Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership (Hurricane Island) as part of a two-year $25,000 commitment to support their STEM Education Programs which connect students and educators to place-based learning and community-centered science through student focused programs, teacher focused programs, generalized school support, and educational partnerships.

Hurricane Island delivers STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education programming to 34 partner schools across Maine, including Oceanside High School in Rockland. Their programs engage students in research driven projects in their schoolyards and on the waterfront, customizing projects to center student research questions that engage with the local ecosystem. Their science instruction offers hands-on interactions with their marine research sites, teaching science while fostering curiosity, stewardship, and connection to the land.

“We have partnered with the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership to give Oceanside’s STEM and Liberal Arts Academy students the opportunity to experience learning in an outdoor space,” stated Oceanside High School educator, Jennifer Cross. “Our outdoor educational experience has been transformational – creating engaged and informed students who appreciate far more the beauty of our home state and the unique opportunities that our outdoor landscape offers for learning. With what our state has to offer, I believe every student should have the opportunity to access learning outside of the four walls of their classroom.”
