Amid Rising Costs Students Need Help with Back-to-School Supplies

Penquis is requesting the community’s help to provide children with needed items for the new school year.

The annual We’ve Got Your Back school supply drive is underway. Penquis partners with Blueberry Broadcasting to provide backpacks and school supplies for K-12 students in Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Knox counties. This year, We’ve Got Your Back expects to serve 1,000 children with help from the community.

Due to higher prices, the cost of going back to school has never been higher. According to the National Retail Federation, “Consumers are cutting back on spending in other areas, working additional hours and taking other measures to cover costs for back-to-class shopping this season.”

“The higher cost of living has left many families struggling to meet basic needs,” stated Kara Hay, CEO of Penquis. “The Penquis We’ve Got Your Back program helps to ease some of the financial burdens families face, ensuring that every child feels a bit more prepared as they head back to school.”

Penquis is currently accepting donations at all of its offices in Bangor, Dover, Lincoln and Rockland. Cash donations may be made at www.Penquis.org or by texting HelpAStudent at 44321.

On Friday, August 12, the United Way of Eastern Maine will join Penquis and host a Fill the Bus event at Walmart locations in Bangor and Lincoln from 10 am-4 pm. Donations of backpacks and school supplies will be collected at the event. Cash donations will also be accepted. All proceeds will benefit the We’ve Got Your Back program.

Penquis requests that donations be made on or before August 12 for distribution to families beginning August 22. Families who wish to register for assistance can visit www.penquis.org. The deadline for registration is Aug. 13th. For more information, contact Renae Muscatell at rmuscatell@penquis.org.
